William Jennings Bryan intended that what became known after his death (five days after the July 1925 Scopes trial's conclusion) as "The Last Message" would be his closing argument at the trial. However, it became Bryan's unspoken speech because the trial ended abruptly when Darrow asked the jury to return a guilty verdict so the case could be appealed to the Tennessee Supreme Court. Bryan spent several days following the trial preparing the text for release to the press. The Associated Press and the United Press sent the entire speech to all their clients. The International News Service sent almost half the text to their clients.
