Transcripts of papal bulls, letters, travel accounts, reports, and cédulas from 1493-1843, pertaining to the discovery, exploration and settlement of the Philippines, and to the political, economic, military, and ecclesiastical organization of the islands as Spanish colonies. Early documents concern Pope Alexander VI’s line of demarcation, Magellan’s expedition to the Philippines in 1519, and Pigafetta’s account of the first voyage around the world. Other documents detail Spain’s conquest of the islands, beginning with Cebu, and colonization under the first governor, Miguel López de Legaspi. There is abundant correspondence of important governors such as Ronquillo, Dasmariñas, Tello de Guzmán, Morga, and Anda y Salazar, concerning the political administration of the islands; relations with bishops and the religious orders; the founding of monasteries and missions in the Philippines, China, and Japan; defense of the colonies against the English, Dutch, and Portuguese; and ongoing difficulties with the Moros and Sangleys. Numerous transcripts document the important commerce between the Philippines and the Far East, as well as the key trade route between Manila and Acapulco. Additiona
