System/55 System Integrators Inc. PO 13626 Sacramento, CA 95853 System/55, also known as the Coyote system, was the software used by the Los Angeles Times to write, edit and publish stories in the era of cold type -- before pagination, when it was replaced by NewsGate, which used Microsoft Word as the front-end for word processing. System/55 was a powerful system that was easily customized to each user through the use of "macros" in levels of SDKs (System Defined Keys), GDKs (General Defined Keys) and UDKs (User Defined Keys). It also allowed page designers to use "area composition," to film a headline over several columns of type at a specified width and then to set the "runover" or continuation type at a different width. Remarkably advanced for its day. Contents of this manual are: Directory Filtering December 1981 System Manager's Manual July 1983 Editorial Manager's Manual March 1984
