In many countries of the world this is the case for the majority of the population, and in some rural areas almost all the population. This booklet will deal with some of the non-technical aspects of promoting wind energy for rural electrification, as well as giving a guide to needs assessment, resource assessment and technology choice. Examples from Peru and Sri Lanka are used to illustrate some issues. For a more detailed look at the wind generator itself, see the technical manuals produced along with this booklet concerning generator and rotor manufacture (details are given in Appendix I). Part 1 gives an overview of the technology of domestic scale wind generation. It looks at the technology itself as well as site and resource assessment, needs assessment and economics.
