This book covers the topic of Telescopes in Space. Observation of the night sky's started way before Civilization. Early humans looked at all the lights in the sky, saw that some moved, and some were fixed. What did it all mean? The latest approach is to put the telescopes in space, beyond the interference of the atmosphere. Now we can see more clearly, and farther. The atmosphere not only causes scintillation, but filters higher frequencies such as the ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays. It we want to see in these wavelengths, we need to get up above the atmosphere. Essentially, the atmosphere has “windows” in the optical and radio frequencies. Using high altitude aircraft and balloon-borne telescopes is only a partial solution. This book discusses some 45 space-based astronomy missions.
