First Chapters of 1923 This audiobook features introductions to ten novels that have recently become public domain. Two are aimed at children, Lucy Maud Montgomery's wistful Emily of the New Moon and Hugh Lofting's anti-slavery Dr. Doolittle's Post Office . The shortest chapter is from Jean Toomer's lusty African American classic, Cane , and probably shouldn't be heard by children. The next shortest is from Arnold Bennett's Riceyman Steps . There is one long chapter by D H Lawrence: Kangaroo , about an disgruntled Englishman who moves to Australia. The others are Frank Packard's tale of three criminals ( Four Stragglers ) after WWI; a snappy crime spree in contemporary London by E. Phillips Oppenheim ( Michael's Evil Deeds ); another look into middle-class Indiana by Booth Tarkington ( The Midlander ), which begins with a Penrodesque tale; Willa Cather's A Lost Lady , set in turn of the last century Colorado; and Maxwell Bodenheim's sardonic story of a sneak thief cum would-be poet in The Blackguard .
