The New Left A Documentary History Author: Massimo Teodori Publisher: Bobbs-Merrill Company Date: 1969 The fact that a New Left exists in the United States today, in 1968, is the proof of a reality which manifests itself both in society at large and in the political arena. What this New Left is is more difficult to say, because there is very little unity between the various organizations, programs and ideological statements which form the phenomenon usually referred to as "the Movement." Since the New Left is still very much an open subject, the following commentary, which comprises the first part of the volume, does not claim to be definitive. It treats, on the one hand, the development of the Movement which has been taking place for nearly a decade and, on the other, the debate which has grown within and around the New Left. We must explain at the outset that when we speak of the New Left in the United States today, we mean simply the Left, because there exists no traditional left playing an important role on the national scene.
