This is a collection of five volumes of transcripts of the Executive Sessions of Joseph R. McCarthy's U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on the Investigations of the Committee on Government Operations from 1953-54, along with an index to those transcripts. As the introduction to the documents written by Donald Ricthie notes, McCarthy held 117 executive sessions in 1953, "took testimony from 395 witnesses in executive sessions and staff interrogatories (by comparison to 214 witnesses in the public sessions), and compiled 8,969 pages of executive session testimony (compared to 5,671 pages of public hearings)." Though the public hearing transcripts were "published within months," executive session transcripts were closed for 50 years, and released to the public in 2003. They can be found at this web site: http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/generic/McCarthy_Transcripts.htm For records on the committee investigation that led to the downfall of Senator McCarthy, see: http://archive.org/search.php?query=creator%3A%22United%20States.%20Congress.%20Senate.%20Committee%20on%20Government%20Operations%22%20AND%20subject%3A%22Army-McCarthy%20Controversy%2C%201954%22
