This summarizes the Biostatus hypothesis, a unifying theory of "morale"-- in its usual sense of how effective you are and how good you feel, which are deeply linked. Another version appeared in the short-lived Journal of Economic and Social Intelligence, you can read it at https://archive.org/details/sec-life-93-jesi-read/mode/2up The biostatus hypothesis is that our effectiveness and exuberance constitute a unified system, present at least in all mammals, Biostatus is an internal counterpart to the status system-- an evolved system of evaluation and reward. There are probably no crucial experiments to prove or disprove this theory-- it is a framework of understanding, like Darwin's theory of evolution. Like the theory of evolution, it unifies many different facts. However, that doesn't make it true-- it is strengthened by examples and could be weakened by counterexamples. (This is a condensed version of an existing book-length manuscript, which unfortunately is not in a form which is currently accessible.)
