Gilson died in Auxerre in Burgundy, France, on 19 September 1978. PIMS mounts a yearly Etienne Gilson Lecture Series. to carry on his exemplary tradition of teaching. Professor Gilson, an exemplary Catholic, possibly the most renowned medievalist of his day, influenced hundreds of graduate students, many of whom teach philosophy today in the universities and colleges of the United States and Canada. His thrilling lectures were filled to overflowing. A list of his publications contains over twelve hundred articles and full-length books.
