Lovel is driven from his village after his grandmother's death by superstitious neighbours who suspect him of being a witch due to his crooked back and healing skills. He takes shelter at the Abbey of New Minster, where he further develops his healing knowledge and is befriended by Rahere, founder of St. Bartholomew's Hospital (still operating today). Read by Alan Gilchrist.
