The Holy Spirit surely loved Edith Stein. He lead her directly into the arms of Our Lord. In her 20âs, Edith was a brilliant Jewish scholar and a colleague of many leading European philosophers. When she was 30, after reading an autobiography of Saint Teresa of Avila, she realized (and commented that) what she had read was âthe truth!â Never one to back down from a conviction regarding truth, Edith Stein was baptized into the Catholic Faith a year later. Soon after, and to her motherâs dismay, Edith revealed her dream to become a Carmelite sister. She began teaching at a Dominican school and studied the philosophy of Saint Thomas Aquinas, resulting in her German translation of his treatise, âThe Truth.â When Nazi restrictions precluded her from teaching because she was a Jew, Edith followed through in her desire to offer everything to God and to live âas a hand maid of the Lord.â She entered the Carmelite Order as Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Read this beautiful story of Sister Benedictaâs remarkable journey of faith and, ultimately, of her death in the gas chambers of Auschwitz.
